AFS Intercultural Programs for Students

AFS, an organization which offers various intercultural programs for high school students, visited the first year students of our school on June 15, 2017.  Natalie Durčáková introduced two Czech AFS representatives who talked about the program in which students can participate in foreign exchanges, hosting foreign students in the Czech Republic, and volunteering in general with AFS.  The students were given a quiz about stereotypes and cultures of different cultures, and the team with the most correct answers won a small prize.  Along with the two Czech representatives were two foreign Students.  Míša, a 16 year-old student from Hong Kong who has been living in Karvina and studying at a gymnazium in Ostrava for the past 10 months, and Denis, an 18 year-old student from Istanbul who has been living in Frýdek-Místek and studying at the local technical school for the past 10 months.  Míša prepared a presentation about her home in Hong Kong.  We learned about the different parts of Hong Kong, food, transport, and flats and the school system.  Denis also prepared a presentation about his home in Istanbul and showed us some videos of Istanbul, nightlife in Instanbul and the gorgeous Blue Flag sea on the Asian side.  Both presentations were in English and after each presentation, the students asked Míša and Denis about their experiences in the Czech Republic and the differences between the cultures.
